About Art Reposts (feat. a Reverse Google Image Search tutorial)

herzspalter:

I’m sad that this seems to have to be repeated every so often, but if you see artwork online that you like, please do not repost it. I know that people usually don’t mean any harm when they repost, but every piece of art has a lot of effort, time and work behind it and it’s highly unpleasant to see your own things on other websites without any credit. So please, do not do it, okay?

Of course it’s different depending on the artist if they mind being on other websites or not, but you should never assume that it’s okay without asking first.

If you really really want to post someone else’s art on another website, please contact the artist and ask them if it’s okay to do so. If they say no, don’t post it. If they don’t reply, don’t post it. Not getting an answer is not a yes.

Don’t be rude if they don’t give the answer you wanted to hear! And don’t try to guilt-trip them with something like “but this other artist let me repost their art, why do you not want to??”. It’s each artist’s own decision and should be respected.

If the artist says that they’re fine with you posting it somewhere else, give proper credit. Write who made the piece and where to find them.

Do not remove/crop out watermarks. They’re there for that exact reason. Furthermore, if there’s a watermark on the picture, still go and ask the artist if it’s okay to repost.

If you find a picture and don’t know who made it or where it’s from, I suggest a reverse google image search! If you don’t know how that works, here’s a quick step by step (this process takes about half a minute tops!):

– Save the image link of the picture you wanna search (if you’re having trouble with it, open the picture as a separate tab/window and copy the link, that should do it) Also make sure to take the biggest resolution you can find of the picture!

– Go to Google Images and click on the little camera in the search bar

– Copy the link into the bar that asks for an image URL

– Google will now look for pictures that look similar. Scroll down and there is a high chance that you will find a link to the original post!

– You now know who the artist is! You can now directly like/reblog/retweet/whatever the pic you liked, or you can contact the person who made it!

This takes less than a minute and will save everyone involved a lot of hassle!

I know that people who repost art don’t mean harm and probably didn’t think about it too much, but that’s why I’m making this post! Please don’t repost unless the artist has given you 100% certain approval! Thank you, I wish you all the Best!
